We are now in a position to be able to issue the first list of charts. This consists of 69 charts (mostly showing details of two or three generations). Also available are lists of marriages in the counties where the Solley names appear in any volume.

The charts are in typed form on A4 sheets, laid out in a "waterfall" manner. This system whereby the earliest name appears top left and later generations appear in vertical lines to the right has been devised for computer produced presentations. Although it does not allow all details and notes to be included, it provides an economic and efficient presentation of the tree, and is provided with a detailed report which includes all the information that we hold.

The current members of the society have roots with the Kent families and so the detailed information that accompanies the charts is generally only relating to families with Kent origins. We would be delighted to hear from anyone who can help with the other counties. The main areas (as shown in the IGI) are London, Middlesex and a separate branch in Worcester.

The chart coding system has been developed by Don Steele and the Sole Society and is intended to group families by their general area of origin. Each chart is coded with up to four letters. The first letter indicates the county or general area from which the earliest stem originated. As we have given priority to constructing trees from families in Kent our charts all begin with a K. The second letter will be one of a group allocated for the Solley names (R to Z). Thus, whatever the county from which the stem originates Solley names wilt be grouped together. The other letters are designated for Sole, Saul and Sewell, but each derivative may be extended if there is a large population in a particular area.

We are indebted to our members who have supplied much of the information included therein. These include George Solly, Hamish Robertson and Alan Solly. Elizabeth has collated a tremendous amount of hard to obtain information (such as wills), whilst I have been working through the IGI and Census data, inputting information that keeps arriving.
