Few, if any, families have been consistent in the spelling of their surname. The version in the index is either the one given to us by a member researching the family or the one used in the first record we found for the individual. So if the form of the surname in the index is different from the one you expect but the other details fit, this is probably the person you are seeking.

 

In order to construct the index it was necessary for everyone in it to have a birth date, so where these were unknown we've used educated guesses. In order to distinguish between known birth dates and guesses and to give an indication of the reliability of the guess we've included a qualifier column before the birth date. If the column is blank, then we have evidence that this is the correct year of birth. We have used 'about' to indicate that we have evidence that this is correct to within a few years (these are typically based on baptism dates, census ages etc.) and 'circa' to indicate a complete guess (typically based on people being about 25 when they marry or have their first child). The 'circa' dates could be wildly wrong and are only there to place the individual in approximately the right part of the index.
