It is with great sadness that we have heard of the death of Essex Sewell co-ordinator Brian Sewell.

Brian joined the Sole Society in 1998 and in 2000 he became a committee member and co-ordinator of the county of Essex, a massive task and one which he worked on tirelessly. He worked hard to research and co-ordinate the many Essex families, some expanding into hundreds of members with many branches. He kept in touch with many of his Essex researchers offering help and advice.

In 2004 Brian resigned from the committee due to ill health but when well he continued to work on the Essex families and leaves a lasting legacy to the Sole Society.

As Sewell co-ordinator, Brian was a tremendous support to me, he was patient and kind and I knew I could rely upon him for his help and knowledge. He always had a smile and a kind word. As usual he was there at our annual gathering in October 2011 with his wife Gillian, an event he missed only when ill health prevented him attended.

Brian died on the 1st March 2012 following complications from surgery. Our thoughts are with Gillian and his family at this difficult time.
