Sarah Hay and Pam Rose have been busy researching their Sewell ancestors and they have found the following interesting papers:

Land and property for sale by Messrs Beadle and Co in 1879 regarding HARROW FARM:

The plan of Estates in the parishes of South Hanningfield, Runwell,Downham and Rettendon Essex. There was a map detailing the property and land, including a description:

On the sale plan it shows a number, 90 & 114 (part of) SEWELLS, 140 Allotment, 139 Homestead part of garden in the parish of East Hanningfield, 431 Sewells. 432 Homestead (part of)

Other names on map of surrounding land included Mrs S Cross, Major Spitty, Thomas Kemble Esq, R.B. Berens Esq, Mr Thomas William Blyth, and Late Lord Justice Tyndall, WM Tufnell Esq. Mr Oddy (plot 115 LOT SIX)

I have not looked at whom this was sold to at auction at the time of Sale, but I know my Great, great, grandfather James Sewell with 2nd wife Amelia Sewell nee Hand lived here with their family in 1881.

I also found my James Sewell in the 'Register of Licences for 1888:

James Sewell holder of licence with Wells and Perry of Chelmsford The Leather Bottle and The Sand Pit ,West Hanningfield, entry 49 ,page 38 on August 31st 1888 and also 1889 Holder of Licence same Beerhouses entry 45, page 83, August 1889.

I did find another sale for the land and property mentioned above in 1914, and part of the sale particulars are shown below. At that time it formed part of the Boggis Estates. It was sold to a Mr Frederick Pluck for £140.00 & £153.00 of Danbury Essex on the 17th July at 4 o'clock. Solicitor Messrs. Blood and Son of Witham. The Catalogue number for the document is D/DBS F45/2 and can be found at the Esssex Record Office.
