SAUL, Thomas, Lt 8th Light Dragoons. Served SA 1796-1803 (162/21). 4.5.1797 his wife arr. Cape with the Barnards in ‘Sir Edward Hughes’. She was ‘an Irishwoman, going out to ‘surprise’ her husband at theCape, an amiable person much ‘tazed by the gintlemen sweet craturs’’ (Lady A Barnard) (156). 1798 list of English persons: ‘Mrs Saul’ (27). 1800 T S was Adjutant of the 8th (162). Through Lady Anne’s good offices he was to have charge of foraging the horses at the Dragoons quarters. June 1802 the Sauls shared Andrew Barnard’s quarters at the Castle (156).

The Party was recruited in Norfolk. Deposits were paid for 25 men, and the party embarked at Deptford in the regular transport ship Ocean, sailing from Portsmouth on 1 January 1820 and arriving in Table Bay on 29 March and Algoa Bay on 15 April.
