Picture Postcards
by Maureen Storey
This article was originally published in the December 2002 edition of Soul Search, the journal of The Sole Society
As the Society’s representative in The Guild of One-Name Studies I was recently approached by Colin Buck to see if we were interested in his Postcard Index.
Colin has a collection of over 90,000 picture postcards from the period 1899–1950 which he has indexed by the name of the recipient. His aim is to unite the postcards with anyone who has an interest in the recipient at a nominal cost.
His letter included a list of the cards that might be of interest to the Society (17 Sewell, 5 Saul, 4 Solley and 3 Sole). The committee agreed that although the cards contain little or no family information (and in many cases we’ve yet to identify the recipient) the Society should purchase the cards for our archives.
Some of the details from the cards are listed below. If anyone can identify any of the recipients can you please let either me or the relevant surname coordinator know.
Colin has agreed to keep us informed if he finds any more cards of interest to us.
